We’re always in awe of our alums, they overcome so much and they’re truly inspiring. And when, on top of that, they choose a path of important work with social impact, we’re insanely proud of them.
18.5 years old Muhamad Kaid Abasi is an alum of our Lighthouse/Migdalor Center in Acre. A few months ago, Muhamad started volunteering as a firefighter as part of his National Service.
“When it’s time to act, I stand fearless in front of the fire,” he said. “I do what I do for the safety of the people, and I feel proud and humbled to do so. During the recent holiday of Lag BaOmer, I was out there, extinguishing fires and making sure people were celebrating responsibly, and that there’s no danger of fires spreading.
It was hard at first, but my shift mates at the station explained everything to me and treated me like I belonged since day one. My commander, Eyal, supported me from the get go and helped me become a better firefighter. I learn something new from him every day.
I’ll never forget the first time I met firefighters. I was in high school and we went on a trip, and our bus caught fire. We saw the firefighters arrive and handle the fire, and that’s when I realized that I wanted to be a part of this incredible thing.
I see being a firefighter as a dream come true and an opportunity for future employment with meaning.”
Muhamad has 2 younger sisters and a family that’s very proud of him.

Our Lighthouse Centers work with youth who find it difficult to integrate into traditional educational institutions. At the centers, youth can work on academic studies, practice athletics or music, and attend a variety of workshops on issues of particular interest to them.
